I originally installed Clockworkmod recovery in order to install CM (the installer didn't support my S4 Mini), but then I had to upgrade the recovery to TWRP in order to update CM after encryption. To the best of my knowledge, TWRP is the only recovery that supports the current (4.4+) encryption implementation.
